Gone are the days when you had to send the physical copy of your income tax return (ITR) to the IT department headquarters located in Bengaluru, for verifying the same. Today all you need is a laptop or a smartphone to verify your ITR.
Let us quickly understand the different e-verification techniques available for tax paying citizens of India.
Aadhar Card based verification
In order to be eligible for this method, your mobile number must be linked to your Aadhar Card and must be registered with UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India). An OTP (One Time Password) would be sent to your registered number, which is valid for 30 minutes. Submit the same into the Indian government’s e-filing portal to get it verified successfully.
Using Net Banking
In order to avail this option, register your PAN with your bank. If it is already registered, login to your net banking account and select ‘E-verify’ option. Soon you would be redirected the government’s e-filing portal. You can generate your EVC (Electronic Verification Code) through your account. The code would be sent to your registered phone number and email address. Submit your EVC on the official e-filing portal for successful verification of your ITR.
Through Government Portal
Your income should be less than INR 5 Lakh per annum, to be eligible for using this mode of verification. Simple login to your account and click on the option, ‘e-verify’ and the OTP would soon be sent to your registered email and mobile. The OTP, as mentioned in other methods, must be submitted to the e-filing portal for instant verification.
Using your Bank ATM
Not every bank is registered with the IT Department and you must check if your bank has this privilege. Simply swipe in your debit card at your bank’s ATM counter and select ‘Pin for e-filing ‘. The unique EVC would be sent to your registered number, which you need to submit at the government portal for ITR verification.
Using Demat Account
In order to successfully verify your income tax returns using your demat account, you must submit your depository details to the e-filing website. Additionally, your depositor must confirm such submission. After logging into your e-filing account, you can pre-validate your demat account by selecting ‘profile setting ‘. Then, choose ‘EVC using a demat account ‘ as your preferred ‘verification mode’ to receive the OTP in your mobile number. Submission of the same in the IT e-filing website will ensure timely verification of your ITR.
Possibilities of online ITR verification
You must remember that unless you verify your tax returns, it stays invalid. On completion of your ITR filing, you get a window of 120 days for getting it verified. While there are 5 electronic methods for ITR verification, they are valid only for ITRs that do not require any auditing. ITR-1, ITR-2 and ITR-4 falls under these categories. In case your ITR returns need to be audited, you need to apply for the Digital Signature Certificate for verification of the same.
